Interview: Brad Marshall, Tucker Goodrich on Obesity Causes, Reductive Stress—A Neighbor's Choice with David Gornoski

Brad Marshall, David, and my dog get together to talk about our commonalities and where we differ.

(That yipping you hear in the background is my new puppy. Sorry about that.)

"David Gornoski, Brad Marshall, and Tucker Goodrich get together for an investigative conversation on what exactly is causing the obesity crisis in modern society. What do we make of the idea of stearic acid as dietary fiber? Is reductive stress driving the obesity crisis? Do we get in a state of torpor after consuming linoleic acid? Is more sugar the way to go, as Dr. Ray Peat suggests?

  1. I honestly doubt that the fattening effect of the Surwit diet comes from high PUFA, especially if the fat comes from butterfat. I rather suspect a secondary effect (maybe in the direction of reductive stress? If the problem with PUFA is, that the ingress into the mitochondria can not be as much delayed as if it was necessary to retain normal energy metabolism, then short chain and medium chain fatty acids in greater amounts [like for example from butter- or coconut-fat] could show similar effects [to a lower extend] and lower the threshold for PUFA-problems; only half-baked thinking here).

    1. Surwit is not high PUFA, but its fattening effect is from PUFA. It's likely why they add soybean oil to the diet.

It's covered in this post: "Does Linoleic Acid Induce Obesity? A Response to Stephan Guyenet. Part 2", under the section titled "The Most Common Human Mutation". The study looking at the mechanism behind the fattening effect of the Surwit diet is (Chang et al., 2020).

      As I summarized:

"The modulation of obesity via ALDH detoxification of HNE in (Chang et al., 2020) in a diet which does not contain a large amount of HNE precursor LA suggests that this may be a fundamental pathway underlying the obesogenic effect of all experimental and human diets, it is, “phylogenetically conserved and thus likely to be universal” (Singh, Niemczyk, Zimniak, et al., 2008). The fact that HNE is derived exclusively from n-6 fats, and primarily from LA, allows us to conclude that this is likely a major pathway behind our obesity pandemic."

  2. I follow both these guys as well as Hyperlipid, respect them all. To me the differences are minor but I like Brad's experiments with trying to fix the underlying issue and restore true metabolic flexibility. Seems like the best solution ultimately. In the meantime I watch omega 6 intake and stay pretty low carb most of the time, plus add extra stearic acid to my foods.
