What To Eat?

Skip the carbs:

"Carbohydrate restriction favorably alters lipoprotein metabolism in Emirati subjects classified with the metabolic syndrome....

"...These results suggest that weight loss favorably affects lipoprotein metabolism and that the [Carbohydrate-Restriction Diet] had a better effect on atherogenic VLDL and HDL than the low fat diet recommended by [American Heart Assocation]."

  1. I hate talking about diet (although I have a lot of opinions on the matter), it almost always leads to a holy war...

I think that in general, "experts" spend too much time telling people what NOT to eat in order to lose weight, get healthier, etc. If you tell people to avoid carbs, they will just go and load up on something else that isn't good for them. That is what happened in the low fat craze... people were told to avoid fat, so they went crazy on the carbs instead.

I am more in favor of telling people to choose foods with maximum micro-nutrients. By following that rule, they will naturally eat less of the stuff they shouldn't because most of the bad stuff (breakfast cereal, bread, oil, etc.) have been stripped of most of their nutrition.

  2. I totally agree with this. A nutrient-rich diet is the way to go, resolves most of the problems with the modern American diet, and also avoids the "holy war" aspect.
